Worker Dies in Jurong Region Line Construction Fall: Singapore MRT Site Accident and Safety Review (2025)

A Tragic Accident at the Jurong Region Line Construction Site: A Call for Enhanced Safety Measures

SINGAPORE - A devastating incident occurred at the MRT construction site for the Jurong Region Line on November 13, resulting in the death of a 46-year-old construction supervisor. The supervisor, employed by Leze Construction, a subsidiary of a sub-contractor to the main contractor Daewoo-Yongnam Joint Venture, fell from a height of approximately 9 meters while descending scaffolding near Block 202 Pandan Gardens in Jurong East, around 5:30 pm.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) have issued a stop-work order for the site and initiated a safety timeout for at-height work activities across LTA projects to review compliance with safety procedures. MOM emphasizes that workers performing work at height must maintain '100 per cent tie-off' and anchor their safety harnesses to independent and secure points.

This tragic incident highlights the ongoing challenges in ensuring worker safety in the construction sector. According to recent statistics, there were 76 incidents of deaths and major injuries in the construction sector during the first half of 2025, five fewer than the 81 incidents recorded during the same period in 2024. This data underscores the need for continuous improvement in safety measures and protocols.

The LTA, as the project developer, has expressed deep sadness and extended condolences to the family of the deceased worker. They are working closely with the contractors to provide support and assistance, emphasizing their commitment to taking a serious view of all safety incidents and ensuring that work-at-height safety procedures are strictly enforced at their worksites.

As investigations into the incident continue, the LTA is collaborating with MOM to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing worker safety in construction projects and the need for ongoing vigilance and adherence to safety standards.
